EARTH HOUR - turning the lights off
Release Date: 30 March 2009
Energy consumption in the Perth city centre fell close to 2 per cent between 8:30pm and 9:30pm on Saturday in support of Earth Hour 2009. This energy saving is equivalent to 50,000 homes turning off lights for one hour.
Western Power has now been involved in Earth Hour for three years and Managing Director, Mr Doug Aberle congratulated everyone, including Western Power employees, for their participation.
“Earth Hour is an important initiative to encourage businesses, communities and individuals to think about how they use energy and find ways to reduce their consumption without too much effort. By working together to make simple changes we can really make a difference.
“Energy saving initiatives like Earth Hour are something we can all integrate into our daily lives,” Mr Aberle said.
Western Power suggests a number of simple things people can do to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions everyday:
- Beat the Peak: In summer set your air conditioner to 24 degrees and try and use non essential appliances, like dishwashers and pool pumps, outside the peak time of 3-6pm.
- Switch to compact fluorescent light globes: Lighting accounts for around five per cent of household greenhouse gas emission, and compact fluorescents use 75 per cent less energy than an equivalent incandescent bulb.
- Turn appliances off standby: Appliances on standby consume up to ten per cent of your electricity bill.
- Turn off anything that doesn’t need to be on: Turn off lights and appliances when they are not required.
Continuing to practice energy saving initiatives everyday will help contribute to a sustainable future.
