Baldivis zone substation assessment

Release Date: 30 July 2009

Western Power is assessing the best site for the development of a new 132 kV zone substation to provide a more reliable supply of power and to cater for an increase in electricity demand in the Baldivis area.

The Baldivis substation was to be constructed at 780 Eighty Road, Baldivis, on a site that was vested with Western Power more than 12 years ago.

“Since announcing its plan to establish the Baldivis substation, we have received a request from a landowner to consider a land swap arrangement, whereby Western Power would exchange its current substation site for one of two alternate sites,” said General Manager Customer Services, Mr Mark de Laeter.

The three sites (see map for more details) under consideration are:

  • Site 1: The original site at 780 Eighty Road;
  • Site 2: A site at the corner of Pike Road and Eighty Road; and
  • Site 3: A site approximately 200 m west of Site 2.

“Western Power is assessing all three sites using a number of criteria, including community impact, environmental impact, technical factors, and cost.

“At this point, no decision has been made as to which is the best site to use for the development of the proposed new substation,” Mr de Laeter said.

As part of the assessment process, Western Power will engage specialist consultants to determine some of the technical information required for the assessment.

The timing of the project is also being reviewed to account for the latest load forecast information and to accommodate the consideration of the alternative sites.

Western Power will host an information session in September outlining all the details of the site options. Residents will be notified when the information session details are finalised. The information session will provide an opportunity for residents to view the options; Western Power’s decision making process and speak with subject matter experts about the site options and the likely timing.
