Western Power’s world-leading telecommunication management system wins 2009 Engineering Excellence Award
Western Power, in partnership with Clarity International, was awarded a prestigious WA Engineering Excellence Award for the second year in a row at the 2009 Engineering Excellence Awards last Saturday 2 September.
Western Power and Clarity International partnered to deliver a rigorously engineered, world-leading utility telecommunication network management system that has successfully integrated multiple systems, some installed up to 25 years ago.
The unique management system took out the Electronics, Telecommunications and Information technology category and was recognised alongside projects including the new Perth Bunbury Highway, Woodside’s Angel project and the Australian Marine Complex – Floating Dock.
Al Edgar accepted the award on behalf of Western Power saying: "I’m delighted to accept this award which recognises two Australian businesses working together to implement a world-first solution in future-proofing Western Power’s Telecommunication assets.”
The new management system is expected to significantly streamline the way Western Power manages its telecommunication network and the utility is already reaping the benefits which include:
- optimised communications operations
- future proofing a $300 million investment
- supporting a safe and reliable electricity supply
- enabling a ‘smart grid’ future
- enabling the connection of renewable energy sources
