Western Power supports threatened Malleefowl

Release Date: 04 November 2008

Western Power is announcing its sponsorship of the Yongergnow Australian Malleefowl Centre for $20,000.  The sponsorship is part of Western Power's commitment to help maintain the environment in the Great Southern in conjunction with the proposed Southdown and Kojonup to Albany transmission line projects.

Western Power's senior environmental officer Olivia Hertsted said the Malleefowl Centre was an outstanding candidate for sponsorship.

"The work the Yongergnow Australian Malleefowl Centre is doing to preserve malleefowl and their habitat is really important and we are proud to be part of it," Ms Hertsted said.

The malleefowl are currently listed as a threatened species in need of national conservation efforts.

The sponsorship of the Yongergnow Australian Malleefowl Centre includes construction of an undercover malleefowl viewing area, development of interpretive signage to assist in malleefowl education and revegetation of the immediate area around the Centre to improve local malleefowl habitat.

"We hope the sponsorship of the Centre helps to protect this unique species and raise awareness of habitat preservation in the area," Ms Hertsted said.
