Rockingham power supply upgraded

Release Date: 15 January 2008

Rockingham residents will benefit this year from over $9 million of investment by Western Power to improve power supplies and increase the amount of power being delivered to the region to meet the growing demand for power.

Western Power will upgrade powerlines and bring the new Waikiki substation on-line early in 2008 to increase the reliability of power supply and to allow for the continuing growth of Rockingham.

Western Power spokesperson Marisa Chapman said the significant works to Houston and Ray Streets will increase the capacity and the flexibility of Western Power’s network.

"The new lines will enable Western Power to connection new homes, increase the amount of power  delivered to the area and  reconfigure lines to restore power more quickly to customers experiencing outages by re-directing power through different areas,"  Ms Chapman  said.

The Waikiki substation is due for completion by mid February which is when landscaping of the perimeter will commence.  Landscaping was delayed until this point to ensure the trees weren’t damaged during construction.

Ms Chapman said a landscaping plan to improve the appearance of the Waikiki substation was created in cooperation with the shire of Rockingham and local community members.

"Western Power, the Shire of Rockingham and local residents have collaborated to create a landscape plan to greatly improve the appearance of the site.

"Western Power is also planting established trees to create a more natural appearance around the substation while the younger plants reach maturity.

"We have also worked to make the walls of the substation more attractive by using a neutral colour in the render," Ms Chapman said.

The substation will cater for the additional power supply required for new housing developments in the area and for the increase demand in power created, in part, by the increase in the use of air conditioners.
