North West Shelf fault reduces WA's power supplies

Release Date: 02 January 2008

A fault at North West Shelf Venture's Karratha Gas Plant today has dramatically cut gas supplies to WA's power generators.

Woodside has stated to the Australian Stock Exchange that it is investigating the cause of the incident and has informed power generators that there will be no gas available tomorrow.

Western Power, the electrical system operator of the main grid, says the gas shortage is expected to lead to a shortage of power available to it to distribute to businesses and homes.

Western Power Managing Director Doug Aberle said twenty percent of the State's power generators will be affected by this fault.

"Due to this major incident on the North West Shelf there will be a shortage of power available from public and private generators tomorrow.

"Everyone will need to share the power available by only using essential power. This applies to homes and business alike.

"If enough power can be conserved by homes and businesses voluntarily reducing their power use then there should not be a need for power interuptions," he said.

"Western Power has chosen to not take out a system order which would legally require people to reduce their energy use.

"There is a good chance that with responsible voluntary reduction in energy use there will be enough power for all to share.

Western Power is keeping Energy Minister Fran Logan informed.
