Manjimup power improvement scheduled

Release Date: 02 April 2008

Western Power and the State Government have committed over half a million dollars to upgrade power supplies in the Manjimup area through the Rural Power Improvement Program.

Western Power has commenced works upgrading the supply of power to customers in the town of Manjimup by installing 5.2 kilometres of overhead line and 1.3 kilometres of underground cable.  Another 1.2 kilometres of overhead line is to be removed.

Western Power spokesperson Leigh Nastasi said the installation of new lines and cables and removal of old lines will increase the reliability of supply to customers.

“Western Power is reconfiguring the power lines around Manjimup so the network will be less prone to outages caused by storm damage and by branches falling on lines,” Mr Nastasi said.

“The reconfiguration will include the removal of some old lines, rebuilding new lines and laying some sections of line underground to improve the way electricity is delivered to our customers, “ he added.

The works include the installation of new equipment that breaks the line into smaller sections, enabling Western Power to restore power to customers more quickly.

“The installation of sectionalising equipment, together with the line reconfiguration, will allow us to divert power through other areas in the event of a fault.  This will reduce the duration of faults and the number of customers affected by faults.”

Mr Nastasi said Western Power is increasing the capacity of the network to carry increased electrical loads to meet the forecast increase in demand for power.

“The increased capacity makes the network more robust and able to carry bigger loads in the Manjimup area.  The capacity increase will allow for more new connections and a better supply to customers,” Mr Nastasi said.

The works are scheduled for completion by the end of May 2008.

The works are part of the Rural Power Improvement Program, which aims to increase the flexibility of the network for regional customers and increase the reliability of power supplies.
