Lake Grace line to avoid troubled waters
Release Date: 07 January 2008
Lake Grace is set to benefit from nearly half a million dollars of infrastructure work by Western Power next year with the installation of a new line to improve the reliability of power supplies.
A new $436,000 four kilometre line will be supported by 40 new power poles and will replace the existing line which runs through land subject to seasonal flooding around Lake Grace.
Western Power's Lake Grace spokesperson Kerrin Digney said the new line would overcome problems previously associated with flooding.
"The current line is very difficult to repair after rain because the land beneath the line is often flooded.
"The new line will avoid this problem by bypassing the flood affected areas, meaning repairs can be easily undertaken even when there is flooding around the town of Lake Grace," Mr Digney said.
The new line will also have bird-diverting technology installed to prevent birds from touching lines as they travel between the bodies of water in the area.
The bird diverters are 40 centimetre long ultra violet resistant PVC coils wrapped around the lines at five metre intervals. The diverters increase the visibility of power lines for birds in flight.
"We are very excited about installing these bird diverting coils, which will assist in the protection of the birdlife in Lake Grace," Mr Digney said.
"The coils will also reduce the incidence of power outages caused by birds," Mr Digney added.
Construction of the new line will commence in early 2008 and is due for completion by June 2008.
