Kensington student off to Maine on AFS scholarship

Western Power this week farewelled 17 year old Michael Kerrigan who won the Western Power sponsored AFS Scholarship for 2008. Michael will be living and studying in the picturesque town of Maine in the United States of America for the next 12 months, thanks to Western Power and AFS Intercultural Programs.
Michael leaves for the Maine, in the US on 13 August 2008.
Western Power Managing Director, Doug Aberle congratulated Michael, wishing him well on a life changing trip.
“I’m delighted to be presenting the award to Michael today. This is a once in a life time opportunity and I know its something you will carry with you long into the future.
“I’m sure you will be a fantastic ambassador, not only for Western Power, but for Australia,” Doug said.
Michael applied for the scholarship after his father, former Western Power employee of 20 years, Michael Kerrigan had bought home a flyer from work.
“I hassled dad for years until he finally agreed I could apply. Now I’m off to Maine and I’ve never even seen snow before.
“I would like to thank Western Power for this amazing, once in a life time opportunity,” Michael said.
Michael was awarded the scholarship based on his school work and ability to adapt to new situations.
This is the twelfth year Western Power has given an employee’s child the opportunity to spend a full year living and studying overseas.
The program presents an excellent opportunity for an interested young student to develop skills, foster understanding of another country, people and culture, while acting as an ambassador for Australia and Western Power.
Application criteria for the 2009 Western Power AFS Scholarship was extended this year to include an employee’s grandchild, brother, sister, niece or nephew.
Michael was presented with a digital camera so he can keep his extended Western Power family informed during his adventures.
