Eastern Terminal substation to be delayed
Release Date: 07 February 2008
Western Power today announced it is extending its consultation period by 12 months for the new Eastern Terminal (ET) substation.
The extension of the site consultation period will provide the community with more time to be involved in the selection process for the planned substation that is needed to provide more power into the Perth metropolitan grid.
Western Power Major Projects Coordinator, Mr Ian Buchanan said that Western Power had developed an innovative solution to balance the community's need for more time and the metropolitan areas need for 1000 megawatts (MW) of more power by the summer of 2010/11.
"To give the community more time to be involved in the site selection for the new ET Western Power will build a temporary structure called a 'Gantry' that connects to the existing metropolitan 330,000-volt network.
"Four transmission structures, consisting of one tower, two poles and a gantry will be erected near the corner of Mundaring Weir and Bahen Roads, Hacketts Gully. This is the only l site that allowed the structures to be located outside National Parks, away from private property and minimised the social and environmental impact.
A 330,000-volt powerline between Collie and the metropolitan area will carry the additional 1000MW and is expected to be in service by November 2010.
It will involve replacing the existing 132,000-volt line between Boddington (Wells Terminal) and the new Gantry in the metropolitan area and increasing the capacity of the line currently under construction between Collie (Shotts Terminal) and Boddington to service the Boddington Gold Mine.
"The Gantry will enable interconnection with the high voltage network allowing for a delay, in the short term, on the construction of ET. Once ET is developed the Gantry will be removed, as will one of the poles.
Mr Buchanan said Western Power acknowledged the community's concerns regarding the ET project and had recommended additional time for consultation to help choose a site for the new substation in the existing study area.
