Eastern Terminal submission period extended

Release Date: 02 July 2008

Western Power has extended the submission period for the site selection process for the Eastern Terminal switchyard to ensure community members, local government and other interest groups have ample opportunity to express their opinion.

The extended submission period will now close on 31 July 2008.  The community is being asked to comment on how Western Power plans to undertake the site selection process for the location of the Eastern Terminal switchyard.

Western Power Approvals and Development Manager, Mr Ian Buchanan, said community members should use this extra time to think about how the process can be improved and submit these thoughts in writing.

"A large number of automated and generic submissions have been received and whilst these have been used to feed back into the process, Western Power urges the community members to submit personal comments to ensure the process accurately reflects individual circumstances and opinion.

"The automated submissions' main messages call for a halt to the project. We understand that message but the reality is this project needs to proceed to provide the metropolitan area, including the hills suburbs, the power increase it needs.

"So we are urging people to send us suggestions on how they think the site for the switchyard should be chosen.

"We are working hard to determine the best process for selecting a site for the Eastern Terminal switchyard, and there is still plenty of time for members of the community to suggest ways in which we can improve our process," Mr Buchanan said.

Western Power would like to thank all key stakeholders, local community groups and residents who have submitted comments on the process to date. Community feedback is essential in developing this process to ensure that the most suitable site is selected taking into consideration the social and environmental impacts.

Once the submission period is closed, Western Power and consultants ERM will review all submissions and incorporate these into the site selection process where practicable. This final process will be made available on the Western Power website, www.westernpower.com.au/easternterminal
