Birds cause an outage

Release Date: 10 March 2008

Western Power has confirmed that two crows caused a brief power interruption in Kellerberrin last week when their wings touched whilst in contact with a powerline.

The two birds were electrocuted when they were sitting on a cross arm at the top of a pole in Mather Road to the east of Kellerberrin.

The crows caused a power interruption affecting 535 customers in Kellerberrin, Bungulla, Mt Stirling and Tamin from 12.15 pm to 1 pm on March 6.

Western Power crews were on the scene quickly and able to remove the birds from the line and restore power to the customers within 45 minutes.

Western Power spokesperson Mr Kim Cooper said the crews worked quickly to restore power.

“The crews were able to restore power quickly after doing an assessment of the area and found no significant damage,” Mr Cooper said.

“We were then able to re-energise the line and restore power to all customers very quickly,” he added.

Western Power said birds were a contributing factor in only one other outage in Kellerberrin in the last 12 months.
