Work on the Bentley substation starts
Release Date: 16 May 2007
Construction has commenced on Western Power's 132,000 volt (132 kV) substation in McKay Street, Bentley, south of the Curtin University Campus to cater for the area's increasing demand for power.
This month sections of 132 kV cables along McKay, Marquis, Earl, Sill and Farnham Streets, Bentley, will be installed. All these cables will be laid underground to minimise power interruptions often experienced by overhead lines due to car crashes or vegetation touching power lines.
The cables will be connected to two 20-metre tall steel poles in the Farnham Street Reserve and to the 132 kV line which currently exists adjacent to the Reserve.
Manager of the Environment and Land Management section, Mr Rudy Teh, said construction of the substation would not interrupt power supplies in the area.
"All the earthworks associated with laying underground cables should be completed by the end of July, and the whole project finished by October 2007.
"To ensure the substation blends into the local surroundings we are working with the City of Canning to determine the best way to visually screen both the transmission poles in the Farnham Street Reserve and the substation site itself.
"We will be constructing a solid wall to enclose the substation. It will be of a limestone appearance and will be two and a half metres high with a half-metre metal security fencing fitted to the top of the wall," Mr Teh said.
