Western Power welcomes change to Grange Reources mine plans

Release Date: 15 March 2007

Western Power today welcomed Grange Resources Limited's decision to investigate a range of possible power transmission line solutions for its Southdown Magnetite project proposed for Wellstead, east of Albany.

The investigation is being conducted in response to a strong message from the community - which was raised during extensive community consultation - that Grange's proposed direct transmission line to Southdown and Western Power's new transmission line to Albany should be combined if at all possible.

As Grange is now investigating a staged development of Southdown, which features a ramp-up period, this will reduce Grange's power demands from 2009 - 2012 and enables consideration of a range of transmission line solutions.

Western Power's Major Projects Coordinator, Mr Ian Buchanan said Western Power is now able to investigate the possibility of combining its plans to provide a new line to Albany with Grange's needs.

"Western Power plans to build a new transmission line by 2012 to meet the growth in demand for power in the Albany region.

"Without this announcement from Grange, Western Power, which now works in a new regulated market, was unlikely to receive the go ahead to bring forward, and expand its expenditure for, the planned Albany line to combine with Grange's initial needs when Grange's proposed mine was yet to complete its approvals process.

"Now that Grange has announced it will investigate new power solutions to deliver power via Albany Western Power can investigate the option of expanding its planned new line for Albany to include Grange's needs," he said.

The line route assessment process for the Muja to Southdown line that runs past Gnowangerup, Borden and north east of the Stirling Range will continue until final confirmation is received from Grange that it can accommodate a staged development for its proposed mine delivering power via Albany.
