Western Power welcomes ERA decision
Release Date: 07 December 2007
Western Power today received its first approval from the Economic Regulation Authority (ERA) for the proposed new Perth to Geraldton transmission line. The new high voltage powerline is needed to meet the growing demand for power in the mid west region.
Western Power submitted its proposal to the ERA on October 4 in what is the first major project under the new regulatory system. The ERA today announced its decision that Western Power's proposed 330kV mid west augmentation satisfies the regulatory test required by the Access Code.
Western Power's Managing Director, Mr Doug Aberle said that the regulatory test is an effective mechanism, which ensures Western Power applies the best economic discipline on major investment decisions.
"This will lead to minimising price impacts on customers ensuring south west consumers of electricity get the best value for their money.
"This is a major step in progressing with the mid west reinforcement, however other important regulatory approvals are still required, including environmental approval," Mr Aberle said.
The construction of this powerline will facilitate the economic development of the mid west and enable the connection of new power generation and major industrial consumers.
Increasing the amount of power to the region will also enhance reliability of power supply to the many customers in the region.
