Western Power launches tree-planting program

Release Date: 13 February 2007

Western Power will plant 93,000 seedlings in two towns in the State's South-West this winter to offset the carbon emissions produced by its fleet vehicles and mobile generating facilities.

Energy Minister Francis Logan launched the $200,000 project in Waroona today.

He said the 93,000 seedlings would absorb carbon dioxide emissions as they grow, and help address the problems of salinity and land degradation.

The program would be managed by Men of the Trees, who will consult with landowners to determine the most appropriate planting sites.

Mr Logan said planting sites would be in Quairading and Waroona.

He said Men of the Trees would identify local tree species for each proposed planting site and order the appropriate seedlings.

"Western Power staff and their families will be invited to participate in the tree planting," Mr Logan said.

"We all have the power to make a difference, and I am pleased to see Western Power continue with its tradition for strong, well-managed environmental programs.

"If we do not all help, we will face much harder choices in the future.

"In the long term, the value of this program will be measured against objectives that are common to federal, state and landcare groups - to improve the state of the environment in which we live."

The number of tree seedlings required to be planted was calculated using the greenhouse calculator found on the website www.carbonneutral.com.au .

"We can work out, as individuals, what impact we have on our environment, and through Carbon Neutral, we can offset those emissions through the planting of trees," Mr Logan said.
