Trees planted with appointment of SERCUL

Release Date: 08 March 2007

Planting for residential properties to visually screen the new transmission line situated alongside the Roe Highway commenced last week.

South Eastern Regional Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL) members began planting last week to screen residents' view of the powerlines on Roe Highway

Western Power had already planted over 12,000 seedlings along the Roe Highway reserve and is now planting a variety of trees to visually screen the line from local streets and backyards.

The South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL) is conducting the planting in the suburbs of Leeming and Bibra Lake for Western Power.

Landcare Coordinator, Jeremy McMath, is project managing the planting and all residents will be contacted to discuss their planting requirements over the next few weeks.

SERCUL is starting on the most affected streets such as Parkway Road, Briar Court and Dowell Place.  Completion of work is expected by the end of April.

Bibra Lake Resident's Association member Jodi Watterson is very glad planting has started.

"The residents of Bibra Lake have been waiting for sometime for mitigation and it is good to see that Western Power has honoured their promise and finally started work to achieve a resolution.

"I know the many affected residents of Bibra Lake are thankful that they can actually see trees and shrubs in the ground."

Manager of Western Power's Environment and Land Management Section, Mr Rudy Teh, said Western Power was pleased to be able to support SERCUL by using them as a contractor.

"SERCUL is a not for profit environmental organisation and they supplement their income by doing commercial work. They are dedicated to improving the management of natural resources in the Perth metropolitan region and we are happy to be able to partner with them.
"Western Power welcomes the opportunity for SERCUL to promote environmental sustainability and provide safe practices to protect the waterways during the course of their work in the communities of Bibra Lake and Leeming," Mr Teh said.
