Release Date: 11 May 2007
Timothy Blackford (19) and Nicholas Travers (18) from Margaret River and Bridgetown have jointly won the 2007 Western Power Stuart Morgan Scholarship to support them through their university studies.
It is the first time Western Power has awarded a joint scholarship.
Western Power Managing Director Doug Aberle said both applicants were of such a high standard it was impossible to separate them and provide the annual scholarship to just one.
"Timothy and Nicholas had both achieved excellent academic results and were outstanding recipients of the award", he said.
Awarded annually by Western Power, the prestigious Stuart Morgan Scholarship honours the former Chairman of the State Energy Commission of Western Australia and supports country students studying engineering, commerce or marketing at a West Australian university.
Stuart Morgan's experiences, growing up in country WA, gave him a personal understanding of the extra challenges that confront young adults striving to better themselves and gain qualifications.
The scholarships provide Timothy and Nicholas with the opportunity for vacation work experience with Western Power and direct $4,545.50 ($9,091 shared) each year toward their university degrees.
"Timothy impressed me with his academic performance and his involvement in extra-curricular activities where he showed strengths in leadership and organisational roles.
"Nicholas bordered at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar and achieved excellent academic results while dedicating himself to an impressive array of community service and involvement in the arts", Mr Aberle said.
Both Timothy and Nicholas earned impressive lists of Awards over the past six years. Amongst others Timothy was the runner up top student at Margaret River Senior High School, earned a UWA Excellence Award, Caltex Best All-rounder and gained an Outstanding Achievement Certificate - Engineers Australia.
Nicholas was the Dux of School at St Brigid's, earned a Sportsmanship award, Fairest and Best (Boyup Brook Jnr Hockey Assc), Innovation award and a Certificate of Excellence at Bridgetown High School.

Previous winners have come from Denmark, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Esperance, Narrogin and Bunbury.
Western Power provides a range of scholarships, cadetships, apprenticeships and university prizes to support young West Australians.
