Storm preparation
Release Date: 03 January 2007
Western Power is preparing for the once in a generation storm expected to hit the southern half of WA tomorrow.
Western Power, which transports electricity in the south-west grid, warns that power lines and poles could be damaged if the storm delivers strong winds.
Managing Director Mr Doug Aberle urges people to stay clear of any downed power lines and to call 131351 if they see any damaged poles and lines.
"Safety is the highest priority, especially in these types of situations.
"Western Power will have crews on standby to restore power as quickly as possible but we can’t stress enough the dangers that can be caused by a significant storm damaging the electricity network."
Western Power recommends people:
- Have fresh torch batteries in case of power outages
- Place fresh batteries in a wireless to hear radio updates
- Listen to radio stations for details on areas without power and expected restoration times
- If possible, connect a phone that doesn’t require electricity
- Keep away from any water near downed power lines
- Turn off sensitive appliances until power is restored to avoid any possible damage to equipment.
