Regional students urged to apply for scholarship

Release Date: 12 November 2007

Applications are closing in December for Western Power's regional tertiary Stuart Morgan Scholarship.  The sought after scholarship provides assistance with university costs and offers paid vacation at Western Power for two lucky students from regional WA.

Students must be commencing university study in Perth in 2008 and have completed their schooling in regional WA.

Applications close on December 21.   The scholarship is awarded to two recipients, valued at $6300 per annum, to each student who is intending to study electrical/electronic or civil structural engineering and/or commerce.

Western Power's Scholarship organiser, Tanya Prince said the scholarship will assist regional students in relocating to Perth to study.

"By offering this scholarship, Western Power recognises and hopes to assist with some of the challenges faced by rural students wanting to achieve a tertiary education and experience the range of opportunities offered by university life," Tanya said.

2006 winner of the scholarship Ashleigh Clifton from Esperance said she was grateful to Western Power for offering the unique scholarship.

"The scholarship is great because as well as the financial assistance I also get the practical experience of a work placement with Western Power," Ashleigh said.

"The work placement gives me a competitive advantage when it comes to employment," Ashleigh added.

The selection process will take into account academic performance and non-academic factors such as community involvement and practical experience.

The scholarship will be awarded at a special presentation held by Western Power in Perth in 2008.
