Power to Dwellingup townsite restored
Release Date: 12 February 2007
Power supplies to the town of Dwellingup returned to normal yesterday after seven generators were removed and the town was reconnected to the electricity grid.
The generators were used to supply the town after bushfires swept through the area and cut power last week.
Western Power's Managing Director, Doug Aberle, said the fire destroyed nearly two hundred power poles and cut Dwellingup's connection to the electricity grid.
"Damage to the main powerline into town was extensive and from the first day of the fires it was clear repairs would be time consuming and that emergency power was needed.
"In total Western Power provided seven emergency response portable generators to power water pumps, the local petrol station, the emergency fire response centre and as much of the township as possible.
"Western Power has now completed repairs to the main powerline and replaced 110 power poles and damaged powerlines.
"I congratulate both Western Power staff and contractors for their hard work and commitment to restoring power in the Dwellingup area.
"They worked in very trying and difficult conditions and many lived in temporary accommodation to maximize their working hours.
"We are now focusing on restoring power to the remaining 26 properties in outer-lying areas of Dwellingup, who are still without power. A further 80 poles need to be replaced before a full restoration is completed.
Residents close to Dwellingup townsite who are still using private generators are now advised that they can reconnect to the electricity network with the assistance of a qualified electrician.
