Power supply update

Release Date: 15 February 2007

Western Power's zone substation at Malaga, was affected by a power outage today after a vital piece of infrastructure at the Northern Terminal Substation was damaged, this major substation feeds power into the Malaga substation.

The fault occurred at 2pm interrupting power to approximately 10,000 properties, power was restored shortly after 3pm.

Crews were able to restore power by redirecting electricity from another substation.

The worst affected areas were Malaga, Koondoola, Ballajura, Greenwood and Marangaroo.

The system interruption also caused a momentary power loss in the CBD.

Power supplies have also been affected in the south west after recent light rain caused pole top fires.  Bushfires in the south west contributed to the dust and ash buildup on powerlines and insulators.

Pole top fires are not unique to WA and occur when light rain or drizzle comes into contact with dust and electricity on the power lines and affects overhead power systems around the world.

A dozen pole top fires affecting 4,500 properties occurred in the Bunbury, Collie, Kojonup and Katanning today with the majority of power now restored to these areas.

Two pole top fires have occurred in Hamilton Hill and Armadale.  Crews are currently on site at both locations and are attempting to isolate the fault and divert power from other areas and restore power to customers.
