Power boost for Metropolitan area

Release Date: 13 September 2007

Western Power plans to build a new terminal substation in the Kalamunda/Mundaring area to meet the growing need for power in the Perth metropolitan area.

Western Power’s Major Project Coordinator, Mr Ian Buchanan said that Western Power is now in the process of seeking a suitable site on which to build the new Terminal Substation (TS), to be called Eastern Terminal.

“Community consultation is a very important and extensive part of this project, and Western Power is inviting interested community members to attend an information session on the site selection”.

The information session will be held at the Kalamunda Agricultural Hall on Wednesday September 26 between 5.00pm and 8.00pm.

The purpose of the information session is to:

  • introduce the project and provide information about it to the community;
  • provide information on the steps involved in the site selection process, and advise community members how they can become involved; and
  • provide the community with a project team member and internal and external specialists to answer questions.

In addition to the selection of a site and the construction of the TS the project will also include;

  • stringing the second side of the powerline between Shotts TS and Wells TS at 330,000 Volts double circuit (75km).
  • rebuilding 90km of existing 132,000 Volt powerline between the Wells TS and Eastern TS from to a 330,000 Volt double circuit transmission line.

Western Power is also inviting the public and interested parties to lodge submissions about economic proposals on alternative options, in relation to rebuilding the existing 132 kV transmission line from Collie to Eastern Terminal to 330 kV.

“The public is invited to comment on an alternative option to supply power or on Western Power’s preferred option of rebuilding and upgrading the existing line.

“A document outlining the options and an invitation to lodge submissions, is available on the web at: www.westernpower.com.au," Mr Buchanan said.

A public forum to discuss Western Power’s preferred option for the network upgrade will be held at the Perth Convention Centre at 10am on Tuesday 18 September 2007.

“The forum will provide technical details about the proposed transmission line and facilitate discussion on all options.

“All public submissions are to be lodged by 5 pm Tuesday 9 October 2007.

“The total cost of proposed project is estimated to be $180 million.

“We expect a suitable site for the new terminal substation to be chosen by the end of this year. The local community will then be kept informed during the approvals and construction phases.  More information can also be found on our website,” Mr Buchanan said.
