New Bibra Lake substation ready for summer

Release Date: 20 December 2007

Western Power has completed construction of the Bibra Lake substation as part of its Summer Ready program to meet growing demand for power during the summer season of peak electricity use.

Construction of the  $13 million substation commenced in March 2005 to improve power reliability for customers in Bibra Lake, Yangebup, Beeliar, Spearwood and Coogee.

Western Power spokesperson Marisa Chapman said WA’s strong economy, an increase in customers connecting to the network and an increase in the average amount of power being used by customers were all driving the requirement for Western Power’s expansion of the network.

"The Bibra Lake substation is required to cater for the industrial, commercial and residential expansion of the area.

"In particular it will provide for the peak electricity load demands of summer," Ms Chapman said.

The Bibra Lake substation will have a second transformer installed in 2008 to increase the amount of power delivered to the area, to improve reliability and to assist in managing peak summer demand periods.

Peak demand across the electricity network has risen sharply in recent years. Last year Western Power recorded a 10 per cent increase in overall electricity use.

"A rapid rise in air-conditioner use has also occurred," Ms Chapman said.

WA has the highest percentage of residential air-conditioners in Australia. The percentage of homes with air conditioners has risen from 47% in 1999 to 82% in 2007.
