Margaret River power upgraded
Release Date: 27 March 2007
Western Power has announced it will spend $35 million to upgrade its existing 66,000 volt powerline between Busselton and Margaret River to improve power reliability to customers in the Margaret River area. The project will also include an associated upgrade of the Margaret River substation.
Western Power’s Managing Director, Doug Aberle said Western Power will rebuild the line and install a 66,000 volt line on one side and a 132,000 volt line on the other.
“The addition of the 132kV line will greatly improve the reliability and security of supply to Margaret River residents and to customers in surrounding areas.
“The new line not only delivers a greater amount of power to meet the growing demands of the region but provides an alternative supply if external forces cause a fault to occur on one of the lines”, he said.
Preparation work for the 37 km powerline will commence in December 2007. The new line is expected to be commissioned in 2010.
As part of the project Western Power will commence a six-month consultation process, before any work is undertaken, to provide information to affected residents and stakeholders.
Consultation has commenced with the Augusta-Margaret River and Busselton Shires. Members of Parliament and affected landowners will be contacted in the next month.
Directly affected landowners received information this week and Western Power will continue to update them as progress on the line continues.
Western Power will decommission the old powerline in 2010 when the new line is in place.
