Investigation continues into cause of Toodyay blaze

Release Date: 06 February 2007

Preliminary findings of an investigation into the cause of the Toodyay fire indicate extreme weather conditions may have caused power lines to clash, sparking the blaze.

The Office of Energy Safety attended the scene on Sunday along with FESA and Western Power investigators but no immediate cause of the fire was positively identified.

Western Power Managing Director Mr Doug Aberle said it may take several days for the actual cause of the fire to be confirmed.

"This is a terrible tragedy that has devastated a family and the Toodyay community and Western Power expresses deep sorrow to all those who have been affected," he said.

Western Power expressed its condolences to the family and friends of Michelle Mack who lost her life trying to escape the fire.

A media conference will be held at Western Power head office, 363 Wellington St, Perth at 3pm.
