Helping Kalgoorlie's special children enjoy Christmas

Release Date: 16 November 2007

Western Power employee Ron Pike is the embodiment of the Christmas spirit.  Every year the Western Power meter-reader from Kalgoorlie organises a Christmas party for Kalgoorlie-Boulder children with special needs.

"The Christmas party is for all kinds of children, from kids in wheel chairs to children whose families are just going through tough times," said Ron.

Ron, who organises the party every year with the help of his wife Barbara, said he doesn't organize the party for the recognition.
"When the kids see Father Christmas come along in the fire engine their faces just light up.  That's all the reward I need," Ron said.

Now in its 14th year, the Christmas party has grown from a party of 39 children in its first year to cater for 351 children in 2007.

Western Power has been with Ron since the beginning, this year buying the food for the sausage sizzle.

Managing director of Western Power Mr Doug Aberle said the Christmas party was one of those heart-warming ways that business can do a little bit extra.

"Western Power is proud of the role it plays in bringing joy to some Kalgoorlie children who need it most this Christmas," Mr Aberle said.

The party is run as a Christmas picnic with face painting, a bouncy castle and pony rides.

All children under 14 years of age receive a present.

The party will be held on November 25 at the Boulder Loop Line Park.
