Fires affect Mandurah power supply

Release Date: 27 January 2007

Nearly 1000 Mandurah residents are without power after a bushfire brought down power lines and burnt poles in the Dwellingup, Pinjarra region yesterday.

Western Power crews worked through the night to restore power and extra crews have been brought in today.

Western Power Managing Director, Mr Doug Aberle said that the bushfires and extreme temperatures provide an important reminder that people should use energy wisely.

"With the hot conditions people turn on more power which increases the risk of fuses blowing in the power system", he said.

Western Power has portable equipment on standby in case the extreme weekend temperatures cause power problems. It has placed extra crews on standby in the metropolitan area for the Australia Day weekend.

Approximately 50 residents are curently without power in Mt Claremont and about 200 had power restored in Innaloo and Shenton Park last night.

"We recommend people use power wisely by setting air conditioners to 24 degrees or above and by closing up the house through the heat of the day", Mr Aberle said.

A record amount of power was used on Thursday of 3137 megawatts and further high demand is expected into early next week.
