Cottesloe substation gets a facelift

Release Date: 11 May 2007

Western Power starts work this month on a $14.8 million upgrade to the Cottesloe substation in Curtin Avenue to meet the growing demand for electricity in the area.

The upgrade replaces some of the old existing equipment, improves the appearance of the substation site and with the installation of new equipment increases the electrical capacity of the substation from 66,000 volts to 132,000 volts (132 kV).

The project starts this month with the construction of a solid wall to enclose the substation.

The wall will be two and a half metres high with a limestone appearance and will help to screen the electrical equipment from view.  A half-metre high metal security fencing is fitted to the top of the wall.

Currently, more than 60 per cent of the existing equipment in the substation is more than 30 years old and two transformers at the site are nearly 50 years old.

Manager of Environment and Land Management, Mr Rudy Teh, said when completed, the upgraded substation would be more efficient using the latest environmentally friendly equipment that will also make the substation quieter.

“The work to upgrade the capacity of the substation to 132 kV will provide a more reliable power supply to existing residents and businesses, and will cater for the forecast growth in the Cottesloe area.

“When the work is completed, the upgraded substation has the capacity to meet the power needs of the area until 2025,” he added.

Western Power plans to energise the new transformers in December 2008 and December 2009, and complete the project by June 2010.
