Belridge Senior High School win Solar Model Car Challenge

The solar car challenge was held in Forrest Place over the last two days, with the grand final raced at midday today.
Winthrop Baptist College (Solar Express), a new entrant this year, finished second followed by Aquinas College’s car two (Nemphis Mensa) and Belridge car one (SunRise) finishing fourth.
It’s a bag of victories for the Belridge High School teams who have now managed to hold on to the State Title crown since 2004.
All four teams travel to Adelaide to compete in the national titles on October 27/28.
Aquinas College’s car one (Mike Couanis) was the fastest qualifier, the car two team from Guildford Grammar car two (GGS2) won the best team effort award, best team poster was awarded to Girrawheen Senior High School (Orions) and Best New School presented to Winthrop Baptist College.
A total of 40 cars from 22 schools competed in the two-day event.
Solar Boat winners
Down the road at the World of Energy in Fremantle, the 2nd annual Western Power Solar Boat Challenge was also underway.
- 1st Overall: Gooseberry Hill Primary School, Team 1 (Barracuda)
- and fastest qualifier
- 2nd Overall: Boyare Primary School, Team 3 (Boyare Pearl)
- 3rd Overall: Boyare Primary School, Team 2 (Speedsta)
- 4th Overall: Gooseberry Hill Primary School, Team 2 (Mega-Solar)
Best Team Effort: Sorrento Primary School, Teams 1 and 2
Best Poster: Forrestfield Primary School, Team 1 (Solar Rocket)
The schools created boats that were designed to complete a 10 metre course in a temporary pool constructed at Western Power’s World of Energy in Fremantle.
Students were encouraged to use recycled materials such as plastic juice, milk and soft drink bottles, aluminium cans to keep construction costs below the maximum allowed construction cost of $50.
The event attracted 45 teams from 19 schools and was held outdoors with perfect sailing conditions prevailing.
Gooseberry Hill and Boyare Primary School will be in Adelaide for the national titles along with our solar car winners.
Western Power would like to congratulate all the students who took part in the annual solar events this year and hopes to see them return again next year.
